Tim Smith

As the “face of HMPS”, Tim is responsible for new student enrollment, administrative duties, managing instructor schedules, handling parent concerns, and billing, as well as performing administrative duties for Southlake Arts Magazine.

Mike Dandron

| Teachers

Born and raised in Monroe, Michigan, Mike has been playing violin since the age of 5. He is classically trained but has played Celtic, French/Canadian, jazz, American folk, Appalachian, and country music for most of his life. He grew up playing with the Detroit symphony orchestra’s civic ensembles on violin and trombone and studied with Hollis Baumen and Bob Culver (former head of music education at the University of Michigan. Mike studied Music Education at Bowling Green State University and worked as a musician at Cedar Point Amusement Park playing country music shows. He recently moved to Denton to pursue a career in music education.

Instrument Taught: violin

Teaching Philosophy: I believe that self-discovery is the best way for students to learn. As a teacher, it is my job to guide students to discover their abilities. Anyone can make music, regardless of their background. As long as someone is willing learn and practice, I am more than willing to teach.

Interesting Fact: Mike sometimes listens to Christmas music in the middle of summer because it reminds him of cold weather.

Jesse Chandler

Originally from Woodstock, NY, Jesse has lived in Texas for 7 years. He earned a B.A. in Jazz Performance from the New School in N.Y. Since 2006 when he joined the internationally acclaimed band Midlake, Jesse has toured the U.S., Europe, and Australia. He has played on stage with such acts as Pearl Jam and Norah Jones. He currently lives in Denton with his wife, two sons and their Yorkie.

Teaching Philosophy: Tailor the lesson to the student’s needs.

Interesting Fact: Jesse and his bandmates were the subject of the documentary Midlake: Live in Denton, which was produced and directed by actor Jason Lee and director Eric Noren. The feature-length film premiered at the 2015 Thin Line Film Festival and in Glastonbury, England.

Mike Urness

| Teachers

Originally from Minnesota, where he also played professionally, Mike has been in Texas for the last 20 years studying, teaching, and playing music professionally. He received a B.A. in Jazz Studies with a concentration in guitar performance from U.N.T. Currently, Mike plays guitar for two popular but varied groups, Dallas cover band High Definition and Celtic rock band The Killdares, which performs regularly in DFW and around the U.S., including a cruise gig alongside Celtic Thunder!

Mike and his wife currently live in Denton.
